Standards in CRM Exams Parts 1 and 2

Questions about standards can be sprinkled throughout the CRM exams.   Here's a look at relevant standards for exams 1 and 2.

The Part I exam outline includes RIM program management standards and guidelines as well as global standards.  I’d recommend looking at ISO 15489, Information and documentation — Records management based on Australian work.  Australia continues to be a leader in this area and now has developed VERS, the Victorian (Australia) Electronic Records Strategy which can be found on their website.  Of course the US Department of Defense (DoD) 5015.2-STD version 3 “Design Criteria Standard for Electronic Records Management Software Applications” 2007 is one to be aware of along with its European equivalent Model Requirements for the Management of Electronic Records or MoReq, now in version 2.  These standards might also be useful for Part 5, which covers technology.

Part 2 includes information security, privacy information and metadata.  ISO 17799 speaks to a Code of practice for information security management while NIST has freely available guidance on information classification, media sanitization and other information security topics. In addition, read a little about ISO 23081, Metadata for records, and ISO 25964 and ANSI/NISO Z39.19 2005, standards for thesauri, controlled vocabularies and taxonomy design and maintenance.  ISO 25964 is focused on interoperability and exchange across systems.  ANSI/NISO Z39.19 2005, Guidelines for the construction, format, and management of monolingual controlled vocabularies, is available for free download from www.niso.org/standards/index.html.  There is also an international standard, ISO 15836, for the Dublin Core metadata set. There is lots of information about the Dublin Core freely available on the internet.

A recent article in the Information Management Magazine gives a good overview of relevant standards:  http://content.arma.org/imm/July-August2012/rimfundamentalsstandardsforestablishing.aspx.  The author, Virgina Jones also authored a listing of standards which was recently updated and is available for download from the ARMA International Education Foundation website:  http://www.armaedfoundation.org/pdfs/V_Jones_RIMStandards_Update2012.pdf
